The Asia Pacific region is on the brink of a huge demographic shift. The number of people aged over 60 in the region is expected to triple by 2050, to 1.3 billion people. The region’s rapidly aging population, mounting urbanisation in the countries within it, and the increasingly sedentary lifestyles of its populace are set to result in an exponential increase in the incidence of osteoporosis and fragility fractures.
The APCO Framework is a set of 16 clinical standards of care for the screening, diagnosis, and management of osteoporosis, that was developed by osteoporosis experts from across 2 continents- Asia and Oceania. It succinctly and clearly defines the individuals who should be identified for assessment, the investigations required, relevant indications for treatment, the appropriate selection of interventions to be made, information that patients require for self-care, the need for integration of healthcare systems and methods for monitoring and improving the quality of osteoporosis care.
